History of The Merrow
The iconic University Avenue structure The Merrow is housed, was built in 1965.
The 1271 University Ave. location holds a rich history beginning with the O’Kona in the 1970s, a small neighborhood bar.
In 1979, a change of hands brought the Backstretch, which was known for cheap drinks and great burgers.
In 1984 the location changed up again this time as Peacock Alley, a high energy gay bar that many in the neighborhood today still fondly remember for the good times had there.
The location fell into some bad times after the untimely closure of Peacock Alley.
In 1994 The San Diego Sports Club opened their doors, originally as a sports bar. In 2006 The San Diego Sports Club began to transform itself into more of a nightclub featuring live music.
In 2008 the full transformation into a live music nightclub took place with The Ruby Room which featured craft beers, cocktails, art, and a wide range of entertainment nightly.
In 2013, The Merrow opened and quickly became known as “one of the best kept secrets in Hillcrest”. The Merrow offers a unique location and feel, a neighborhood bar by day, and a wide range of entertainment at night. The Merrow is a hidden gem, with something for everyone.
